Hi,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community. I am sorry to know that you are facing issues with Windows 10.

I do appreciate your efforts and time. Do not worry, will assist you with the issue.

This issue might occur due to system files associated with dvd drive not working properly or an outdated device driver.

Let us follow these methods:

Method 1.

Plug in the device and run the hardware troubleshooter to check the status.

Follow these steps:
a) Press the 'Windows + W' key on the keyboard.
b) Type troubleshooter in the search box and then press enter.
c) Click hardware and sound and run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter.
d) Follow the On screen instructions.

Once this is done, restart the computer and check if this helps.

Method 2.

I would suggest you to check if there is any pending Windows Update to be installed. If yes, then I would suggest you to install the update and check if it helps.

Windows Update: Frequently Asked Questions : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-update-faq

Method 3.

Windows automatically tries to install the correct driver for your device. A driver is software that a device uses to work with your PC. Every device needs a driver to work with your PC.

What if a wired device isn't installed properly? : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows-8/what-device-isnt-installed-properly

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.

I am having a problem with laptop recognizing my external hard drive.  I have a new laptop with windows 10.  When I try to use external hard drive, sometimes it works, most of time it does not.  On 'This PC' on computer, drive reads 'unavailable'.

Took laptop and external hard drive to computer place.  They said windows 10 may have a glitch recognizing external hard drive.

Is there a fix?

Melody

I had the same problem, fixed it by going back to W7 at $125 cost, will never install W10 again, will go Linnox instead!

First, I've been a software developer for the Microsoft Windows platform for the last 18 years.  The Windows + W key combo didn't work.  My system cannot find the " Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter".  My floppy drive is seen (it is listed in Device Manager), but no drive letter can be assigned.  My internal DVD-RW drive was never detected, although my Iomega Zip-100 seems to be in good working order.  I have an external DVD-RW drive that worked for a few days then mysteriously disappeared.  It will not show up again even after several disconnect-reconnect attempts.  What can you tell me?  Be as technical as you need. - All of the mentioned devices worked perfectly under Windows XP Professional 32bit & Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on the very same machine just prior to upgrading to Windows 10.

As those of you who tried this will know - it don't work!

Why do Microsoft Gurus answer questions without trying the advice they're giving first?

NO, I WON'T help you 'find out why it doesn't work' TRY IT, SEE FOR YOURSELF.

Rafe

If you want to recognise a HD try it on a genuine working Operating system - Windows XP (who knows, it 'might' even work on XP's 'shadow' Win 7'.

As to Win 10. I despair.

After 'Vista', I thought they might have learned, but clearly they don't.

Although I'm using '10', it's tough going, both 'simplistic' and frustratingly hidden and overblown.

The much trumpeted 'fireguard', is just as disasterous as it always was, 'BING' is nothing more than a heap of junk, 'Edge' is a faded and corrupt copy of IE.

Come back 'chrome' all is forgiven!

No wonder a bunch of people are now selling support to corporate users who (wisely), wish to continue to use XP.

Microslow - give the people what they want - support for XP!

- bet this gets taken down!

Rafe (Only a 'novice' on this silly environment!)

I never thought that a computer program would make me hate being on the computer but windows 10 has accomplished it. No wonder you are giving it away, it doesn't work worth a ****! there is not enough space on the internet to express not just everything that is wrong or inefficient with Windows 10, but the frustration I am experiencing is beyond words. I have been using windows since Windows 3.0 but from this instance forward I will do everything in my power to eliminate Microsoft Windows from my existence and that of everyone I know. You had a good product until you tried to copy Mac and now you are trying to copy Android and you have become a total failure and it begun after you dropped Windows 3.1. Copy cats will always be copycats.

Responses from Microsoft don't work so can I please go back to a system that does work. I use the CD for practicing songs for performances so it is really important

I have the same issues with my HP x2 Pavillion purchased only 2 weeks ago! I only bought it because MS no longer support my sadly missed Dell XP laptop. I cannot believe MS can continue to ignore W10's obvious and many failings. After four nights of trying to simply play a Disney "Frozen" DVD I now wish I'd never taken those fateful steps into PC World.

Is the DVD/CD drive getting recognized in the file explorer?
